ZAGREB

ZAGREB

Begin in lantern-lit Gornji Grad, wander by Kaptol’s cathedral to café-sprinkled Donji Grad, then trade Maksimir’s leafy calm for New Zagreb’s modern edge. Between funicular rides and museum-hopping, the city blends Austro-Hungarian grace with a creative, contemporary pulse.

🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Upper Town: getting to know the Strossmayer Promenade

  • 🚶 Start in the center at Ban Jelačić Square and climb up to Gornji Grad — via the Tomić Stairs or leisurely along Radićeva. The “Uspinjača” funicular historically connects the Lower and Upper Town, but in early 2026 it is under reconstruction: check the work status. At the top, step out onto Strossmayer's Šetalište — a long terrace with a panorama of roofs, domes, and bell towers. Walk to the Lotrščak Tower: every noon the “noon cannon” fires here, and the viewpoint gives the best “first shot” of Zagreb. End the day on the quiet lanes around St. Mark's Square — the colorful roof tiles of the church with the coats of arms of Zagreb and the Triune Kingdom set the tone for the whole quarter.

Day 2 — Upper Town: “museums within walking distance”

  • 🏛️ Choose 2–3 venues within a five-minute radius of each other: the Museum of Broken Relationships (Ćirilometodska 2) — emotional stories and real-life objects; the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art (Ćirilometodska 3) — the vivid Hlebine school, glass painting, and the “kind” geometry of rural life; the Meštrović Atelier (Mletačka 8) — the house-studio of a classic of Croatian sculpture, intimate rooms and a courtyard. Between visits — coffee on the steps, a short break in the shade of plane trees on the Stross. The pace is slow: 60–90 minutes per museum + a break for scenic photos.

Day 3 — City history: the Zagreb City Museum and the Grič Tunnel

  • 🏛️ The Zagreb City Museum (Opatička 20) is easy to visit “in layers”: from medieval walls to the tram and everyday life of the 20th century. Afterward, go down to the entrance of the Grič Tunnel (Mesnička 12 or Radićeva 19): a cool corridor under the slope of the Upper Town, 1940s wartime shelters, and today’s exhibition-space format. To finish — an evening along Radićeva and Tkalčićeva: terraces, pastry shops, the noise of street musicians. The day’s takeaway is the feeling of a “living” city where history and present-day life literally overlap.

Day 4 — Kaptol: the Cathedral and Dolac

  • ⛪ Morning at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kaptol: the facade is being restored after the 2020 earthquake — a rare chance to see the restoration of a major Neo-Gothic ensemble. Go down to Dolac Market — the city’s “kitchen” with seasonal produce and cheese stalls. After lunch — take ZET bus No. 106 from Kaptol to Mirogoj Cemetery (Aleja Hermanna Bollea 27): Herman Bollé’s arcades, domes, and alleys are an open-air sculpture gallery under the sky. Return the same way (≈12–20 min travel time per segment).

Day 5 — Lower Town: the Lenuci Horseshoe and the Archaeological Museum

  • 🌿 Walk the “green horseshoe” of Donji Grad: Zrinjevac → Strossmayer Square → Tomislav Square → the Botanical Garden. Work in a visit to the Archaeological Museum (Trg Nikole Šubića Zrinskog 19): the Zagreb mummy with the “linen book,” ancient collections, Illyricum. Then — along the boulevards to the Ethnographic Museum (Mažuranićev trg 14): costumes, crafts, living material culture. In the evening — coffee in the historic hall of the Esplanade Hotel (1925) near the Main Railway Station — a classic Art Deco touch for the day.

Day 6 — Technology and science: the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum

  • 🔬 On Savska, 18 — the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum: a mine pavilion, a planetarium, machine demonstrations, and electricity collections. A good balance for a “reset” after the classics. Add a short stop at the Botanical Garden (Marulićev trg 9a) — a green pause among glass greenhouses. For the evening — a concert or performance in the HNK area (Republic of Croatia Square) and dinner on the streets around Gundulićeva.

Day 7 — Contemporary art: MSU and New Zagreb

  • 🖼️ Cross the Sava to New Zagreb: the Museum of Contemporary Art (Avenija Dubrovnik 17) — large white halls, media installations, Croatian postwar art. It’s convenient to get there by tram No. 14/7 along Vukovarska to Avenija Dubrovnik (check the current numbers). Afterward — a walk along modern boulevards, coffee by the river, and a return to the center by sunset.

Day 8 — Upper Town at an unhurried pace: the Klovićevi Dvori Gallery

  • 🖼️ The Klovićevi Dvori Gallery (Jezuitski trg 4) is the country’s largest exhibition venue, housed in a former Jesuit monastery. Pick the current exhibition and spend 1.5–2 hours at a calm pace. Between the halls — the courtyard, then head down to Tkalčićeva for a late lunch. In the evening, return to the Strossmayer Terrace — the lamplight and the Upper Town roofs are especially beautiful after rain.

Day 9 — Lanes and courtyards of the Upper Town

  • 🚶 The “courtyards and stairways” route: Kaptol → Kalenicheva → Vračar → Demetrova — look for hidden arches, old lanterns, and plaques. Drop into small churches and inner galleries, peek into bookshops. This is a day for “your own” Zagreb: fewer points, more observation. For dessert — strudel and coffee at the Hotel Jägerhorn café (Ilica 14) with its historic garden terrace.

Day 10 — Maksimir Park and the city zoo

  • 🌳 Morning in Maksimir Park — the country’s oldest city park: alleys, pavilions, lakes. If you wish — visit the zoo (inside the park). The trip from the center by tram takes 20–25 minutes. The day is designed as a “green breather”: a picnic on benches, unhurried loops around the ponds, birds and rustling leaves. Return via Maksimirska — on the way you can stop for sweets at old pastry shops.

Day 11 — A water day: Lake Jarun or Bundek

  • 💧 Head south to the Sava — the sports and recreation areas by Lake Jarun: running and cycling paths, cafés by the water’s edge. An alternative is Bundek Park with flowerbeds and a waterfront promenade. This is a “long-walk day”: 8–12 km at a comfortable pace, lunches on terraces, sunset over the water. In the evening — return by tram to the center and a late dinner.

Day 12 — Galleries and small museums of your choice

  • 🎨 Leave the day flexible for your interests and the weather: return to a museum you loved, drop into small private spaces, pick up souvenirs—posters, prints, ceramics. Pairs well with short city “loops” through Zrinjevac and Tomislav Square. Time-wise—no more than two museums, to preserve the city’s “taste”.

Day 13 — Medvednica/Sljeme: a day trip

  • ⛰️ If you want a change of scale—head up toward Medvednica: start in the Gračani area. The cable car to Sljeme operates depending on the weather; check the schedule on the ZET website. Up top—walks along forest trails and a view of the city. Back in town, have an early dinner in the Lower Town.

Day 14 — Final loop: favorite views and a warm evening

  • 🌇 Make Zagreb your own: half an hour at your favorite panorama, a quick stop to buy books/prints, an unhurried dinner. If you got goosebumps from the Upper Town—end on Stross; if you fell for Donji grad—do a final loop around Zrinjevac at dusk. Let the city remain not a “closed task” but a living point to return to.
