🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Novosibirsk: Lenin Square and Krasny Prospekt

  • 🚶 Start getting to know the “heart of Siberia” on the city’s most spacious square—Lenin Square. The main dominant feature is the grand Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre with its gigantic dome; around it are broad alleys, granite, light, and scale. Along Krasny Prospekt, the main avenue, you can feel the pulse of a young capital: Stalinist ensembles give way to constructivism and then to строг modern architecture. Stop by the legendary St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Chapel—a tiny snow-white spire on the avenue’s axis, a symbol of the city. In the evening, take a walk along the Mikhaylovskaya Embankment: the Ferris wheel, lights on the Ob Reservoir, and a warm breeze from the river—an excellent, calm rhythm to start a long journey.

Day 2 — Novosibirsk: Akademgorodok and the “smart taiga”

  • 🚶 Akademgorodok is a unique “city in the forest,” a blend of science, pine woods, and Siberian character. Here, the buildings of the institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences sit alongside quiet trails of the Botanical Garden and the beaches of the Ob “Sea.” Walk along the central alley to Novosibirsk State University, go down to the shore, and breathe in the scent of resin—the forest literally begins at the institutes’ doorstep. In the cafés around NSU, you’ll hear the international chatter of students and researchers. On the way back, stop by the food courts and coffee shops near the waterfront—locals like to wait for sunset on terraces overlooking the smooth water.

Day 3 — Day trip: Tomsk—Siberia’s wooden lace

  • 🚆 Transfer: Novosibirsk → Tomsk by train/express: ≈ 4–5 hours on the road; buses take a comparable time. It’s best to leave in the morning and return in the evening.

  • 🚶 Tomsk is a living encyclopedia of Siberian Art Nouveau and carved “wooden baroque.” Wander the blocks around Lenin Avenue: carved window frames, one-and-a-half-story merchants’ mansions, the easygoing student vibe of the oldest university in Siberia. In TSU’s botanical garden, humid tropical air and cacti are a surprise in the middle of the taiga, while on the main streets you’ll find atmospheric coffee shops and bakeries. Back in Novosibirsk, give your legs a rest: an unhurried dinner and an early night before the flight.

Day 4 — Novosibirsk: the zoo and the Ob embankment

  • 🚶 Morning—one of the country’s largest zoos: spacious enclosures, shady alleys, rare big cats and cold-loving species. It’s easy to spend 3–4 hours here at a comfortable pace. In the afternoon, take a walk along the Mikhaylovskaya Embankment toward the renovated terraces and piers: snack bars with Siberian cuisine, views of the broad Ob, and a panorama of bridges. By evening—packing up: tomorrow you fly to Krasnoyarsk.

Day 5 — Flight to Krasnoyarsk and an evening on the Yenisei

  • ✈️ Transfer: Novosibirsk (OVB) → Krasnoyarsk (KJA) direct flight: ≈ 1 h 20–25 min. Morning and daytime departures—daily.

  • 🚶 Evening—on the embankment of the mighty Yenisei: wide avenues, clean air, the silhouette of the Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel on Karaulnaya Hill above the lights of the central streets. Krasnoyarsk is a city of scale and relief: the right bank is hills and pine woods, the left is avenues and embankments. You can feel the breath of the mountains right at the city’s edge.

Day 6 — Krasnoyarsk Stolby: the region’s natural symbol

  • 🚶 Dedicate the whole day to the Stolby National Park. Forest trails lead to granite outcrops—sculptural rocks called “Feathers,” “Lion,” and “Elephant.” The air is coniferous and cool, the trails are well maintained, and the views over the Yenisei taiga are mesmerizing. Hike at your own pace and take breaks: the place is made for an unhurried, contemplative trek. After returning—a hearty Siberian dinner and hot tea: your body will thank you.

Day 7 — Krasnoyarsk: museums, Theatre Square, and Tatyshev Island

  • 🚶 Morning—Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum with its “Egyptian-style” façade: exhibits from archaeology and ethnography to the nature of the Yenisei region. Then—the V.I. Surikov Art Museum in an old mansion: the quiet of the halls and the classics of the Russian school. In the afternoon—Tatyshev Island: bike paths, open space, the river all around. In the evening—Theatre Square with fountains and lights—a pleasant “city” pause between the taiga and Baikal, where we head tomorrow.

Day 8 — Krasnoyarsk → Irkutsk: arrival and the “130” quarter

  • ✈️ Transfer: Krasnoyarsk (KJA) → Irkutsk (IKT) direct flight: ≈ 1 h 40–1 h 50 min. Time zone difference: Irkutsk is +1 hour ahead of Krasnoyarsk.

  • 🚶 In the evening—the “Irkutsk 130” quarter: restored wooden mansions, street musicians, Siberian bistros and coffee shops. The atmosphere is cozy and warm, especially at sunset; a great moment to tune in to Baikal.

Day 9 — Irkutsk: the old town and the Angara embankment

  • 🚶 Irkutsk’s historic center is a chain of wooden houses with carved window frames, merchants’ mansions, and churches by the wide Angara. Walk between the Savior and Epiphany cathedrals, stop by the local history museum (several buildings along Karl Marx St.)—a great introduction to the nature and history of the Baikal region. In the afternoon—the embankment: strict northern light, broad water, and a sense of anticipation for the great lake. In the evening—rest: tomorrow we begin getting to know Baikal from the nearest village, Listvyanka.

Day 10 — Listvyanka: the Baikal Museum and Shaman Rock

  • 🚌 Transfer: Irkutsk → Listvyanka: ≈ 1–1.5 h via the Baikal Highway (about 70 km). In the warm season, river boats from Irkutsk may be available.

  • 🚶 Listvyanka is the gateway to the lake. Start with the Baikal Museum at the Limnological Institute: aquariums with endemic species, interactive exhibits, and an immersive “dive” into the depths. Then—an observation point at Chersky Stone (cable car) with a panorama of the Angara’s source and Shaman Rock. At the market stalls, try hot-smoked omul. By evening, return to Irkutsk—Olkhon and the roads of the Little Sea are ahead.

Day 11 — Irkutsk → Olkhon (Khuzhir): the road to the lake’s capital

  • 🚌 Transfer: Irkutsk → Olkhon Island, Khuzhir village, via the ferry crossing (summer) or the official ice road (winter period): ≈ 5–6 h, with one or two short stops on the way.

  • 🚶 In the evening—first знакомства with Khuzhir: sandy streets, the scent of steppe herbs and pines, slanting sunset rays on Burkhan Rock (Cape Burkhan/Shaman Rock)—one of the sacred places of Buryat shamanism. Night on the island: Baikal’s silence and a dense, starry sky.

Day 12 — Olkhon: the northern route to Cape Khoboy

  • 🚶 Jeep safari or UAZ rides across northern Olkhon: sandy valleys, light dunes, and steppe expanses; the rock arches of Cape Khoboy with views over mirror-like depths. Along the way—a picnic with Baikal fish soup and tea made with taiga herbs. The roads are unpaved: allow extra time and keep a gentle pace—that’s the main удовольствие of Olkhon.

Day 13 — Olkhon: the Little Sea, Ogoy Island, and beaches

  • 🚶 South of Khuzhir is the Little Sea area with turquoise water, clear shallows, and Ogoy Island, where the Stupa of Enlightenment shines on the вершина. In windless weather the water looks like glass—great shots from the stone ridges “spits.” Keep the day максимально relaxed: beaches, swimming in summer, walks along the crests, and an endless horizon line.

Day 14 — Return to Irkutsk with a stop at “Taltsy”

  • 🚌 Transfer: Khuzhir → Irkutsk: ≈ 5–6 h. On the way (by arrangement with the transfer)—a stop at the Taltsy architectural-ethnographic museum at the 47th km marker: an open-air Siberian village, hay racks, a stockade fort, log carpentry, and the smell of fresh sawdust.

  • 🚶 Evening—Irkutsk: dinner in the “130” quarter, a walk along the Angara embankment. Summing up: from the open spaces of the Ob and the granites of Stolby to the steppes and crystal-clear waters of Baikal—a packed but careful 14-day route with enough time for travel and rest.
