🚗 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Geneva → Lausanne: a gentle start by Lake Geneva

  • 🚗 Start in Geneva, finish in Lausanne. About 70 km and around 1 hour 10 minutes of pure driving time via the A1 if you go without long stops. This is an ideal day for picking up the car, getting used to Swiss rules, and making a short, comfortable transfer without overload. On the way, it makes sense to make 1–2 stops: Nyon for a walk along the waterfront and to the castle, then a rolling stop in Morges or directly in the Ouchy area of Lausanne. For the first day, it’s better not to plan mountain switchbacks: the route is simple, fast, and well suited after a flight. Overnight stay — in Lausanne, preferably in an area with easy motorway access or with private parking. Road nuances: a vignette is required for driving on Swiss motorways; in central Lausanne the streets are steep, sometimes narrow, and parking in the old town is less convenient than by the waterfront or in hotels with a garage. Why the day is realistic: short distance, straightforward road, and plenty of time to relax by the lake and settle into the rhythm of an independent road trip.

Day 2 — Lausanne and Lavaux: vineyard terraces and scenic roads

  • 🚗 Start and finish in Lausanne. A circular driving day of roughly 45–65 km, with pure driving time around 1.5–2 hours, but with stops it easily takes the whole day. The main points are Ouchy and the Olympic Park in the morning, then a climb up to Lausanne Cathedral, followed by a scenic drive through Lavaux: Pully, Epesses, Chexbres, Rivaz or Saint-Saphorin. This is not a long transfer day, but a beautiful self-drive through a highly photogenic stretch between the lake and the UNESCO terraced vineyards. Logical stops along the way: viewpoints in Chexbres, lunch with a lake view, and a short walk among the vineyards. It is more convenient to park in official city lots and small designated parking areas in the villages; on the narrow wine roads you should not leave the car by the terrace walls or on the roadside. Road nuances: the roads are narrow, passing oncoming cars is tight in places, especially in the villages; it is better to drive in daylight and without rushing. Overnight stay — in the same Lausanne. Why the day is realistic: small mileage, lots of time for stops, no difficult passes, and the beauty of the route reveals itself precisely at a slow pace.

Day 3 — Lausanne → Vevey → Montreux → Chillon

  • 🚗 Start in Lausanne, finish in Montreux or Villeneuve. Roughly 35–45 km, with pure driving time around 50–70 minutes, but the day is packed with stops. First, an easy transfer to Vevey, then along the lake to Montreux and Chillon Castle. Along the way, it’s good to make 2–3 main stops: old Vevey and the waterfront, central Montreux with a walk along the flower-lined promenades, then Château de Chillon. At the castle there is free roadside parking for up to 3 hours with a parking permit, and also an additional parking option from the Villeneuve side, so it is better to arrive either in the morning or closer to evening, when the flow is lighter. Road nuances: the stretch along the lake is very beautiful, but can be busy in summer; in Montreux parking is more expensive and denser than in Lausanne. It is best to stay overnight in Montreux so you can stroll the waterfront in the evening without needing to get back behind the wheel. Why the day is realistic: short distance, all points lie almost on one axis, and plenty of time remains for relaxed sightseeing and lakeside atmosphere.

Day 4 — Montreux: a panoramic driving day above the lake

  • 🚗 Start and finish in Montreux. Roughly 40–75 km, with pure driving time around 1.5–2.5 hours depending on the chosen loop. This is a day of beautiful climbs and scenic roads: you can drive up toward Glion and Caux, stop at panoramic viewpoints, then return to the lake and devote part of the day to Chillon or a walk around Montreux. As an additional mountain activity, it is convenient to leave the car in town and take the train up to Rochers-de-Naye, because the summit itself is reached much more conveniently by cog railway rather than by trying to find an impossible road approach. Main stops of the day: Glion, Caux, or other viewpoint spots above Montreux, then the lakeside promenade and relaxing in town. Road nuances: the local roads above Montreux are narrower and more winding than yesterday’s, so it is better to drive in daylight, without rushing, and not in the rain; some mountain activities require checking the weather and seasonal operation. Overnight stay — in Montreux again. Why the day is realistic: this is not a transfer, but a beautiful local drive with moderate mileage, where the driver has time both to drive and to relax.

Day 5 — Montreux → Rhône Valley → Brig → Lugano

  • 🚗 Start in Montreux, finish in Lugano. This is the longest driving day of the route: around 250–290 km depending on the chosen line, with pure driving time roughly 3.5–4.5 hours. The optimal logic is to head out on the A9 through Valais toward Brig, take a lunch break in the Brig area, and then continue into Ticino. Main stops along the way: Sion or Sierre for coffee, then Brig as a natural breather before the southern part of the route. On this day it is especially important to monitor road conditions: traffic can be heavy in the Valais corridor, and in the southern direction the BLS car train via Simplon on the Brig–Iselle section can sometimes be convenient as a backup option if you do not want to continue a long detour or want to vary the drive. Before using the car train, you need to check operating hours and arrive early for loading. Upon arrival in Lugano, it is better to choose a hotel with a garage or reserve parking in advance, because the center is compact and partly pedestrian. Why the day is realistic: this is the only truly transit day, but it goes along good main corridors and, with one or two proper breaks, remains comfortable for an ordinary driver.

Day 6 — Lugano and surroundings: lake shores and panoramas

  • 🚗 Start and finish in Lugano. Roughly 35–70 km, with pure driving time around 1.5–2 hours. After the long transfer the day before, this is a gentle day of exploring southern Switzerland by car. The best scenario: in the morning drive toward Gandria along the lake side, then return to Lugano and go up to the Monte San Salvatore funicular station, where there is convenient parking nearby and a municipal car park close by; alternatively, you can choose the Monte Brè side. Main stops: central Lugano and Parco Ciani, Gandria or Castagnola, then one panoramic mountain by funicular so as not to overload the car with steep local approaches. Road nuances: the historic center of Lugano is partly pedestrian, so it is better to park at the hotel or in a city car park and explore the center on foot; local roads are narrower than the motorways, and near the water there may be cyclists and heavy traffic. Overnight stay — in Lugano. Why the day is realistic: few kilometers after a long transit, many scenic stops, and the main impressions come without stressful driving.

Day 7 — Lugano → Agno → Morcote → Lugano: the final lakeside loop

  • 🚗 Start and finish in Lugano. Roughly 45–80 km, with pure driving time 1.5–2.5 hours. It’s best to make the final day circular so you can return the car in the same city without rushing. A realistic route: Lugano → Agno → the lakeside stretches of Malcantone → Morcote → return to Lugano. This is one of the most pleasant days of the whole week: the road runs between water, subtropical greenery, and small towns, and the pace of the route allows for frequent stops for coffee, piers, and viewpoints. Main stops: Agno, Morcote, and one short walk along the waterfront or in the village. If you are staying at a campground near Agno, you can start the day from there and finish in central Lugano before returning the car. Road nuances: in places the road is narrow, requiring a calm but attentive driving style; parking at popular lakeside points is small, so it is better to arrive in the morning. Why the day is realistic: a short circular trip without a rigid schedule, it conveniently wraps up the tour and leaves time in reserve for returning the car, packing, and departure.
