🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Altstadt: first знакомства with the city of three rivers

  • 🚶 Start at Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square) and the nearby narrow lanes Höllgasse and Bräugasse: workshop shopfronts, pastel façades, and nods to river trade. Walk to the Danube riverbank along the Fritz-Schäffer-Promenade — the panorama of Veste Oberhaus on the high bank instantly “pulls” the city into a single frame. At Domplatz, enter St. Stephen’s Cathedral: a snow-white Baroque interior, graceful stucco waves, and the feeling of a vast space — a provincial residence with imperial ambitions. In the evening, take a short loop to the Ortspitze headland, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet in a single arrow of water: here the idea of the “city of three rivers” becomes literally visible.

Day 2 — The cathedral and the organ, Glass Museum

  • 🎶 If you’re here in season (May 2 to October 31), plan midday around the Mittagsorgelkonzert — a daytime organ concert at 12:00 in St. Stephen’s Cathedral: half an hour of pure sound from the world’s largest cathedral organ, revealing the cathedral’s acoustics without any rush. After the concert — the Passau Glass Museum in the historic Wilder Mann hotel: a collection of European and Bohemian glass brings to life the theme of the Danube as a “glass route.” Finish with coffee on Domplatz or by the water — let the city “tune itself” through a pause.

Day 3 — Up to the fortress: Veste Oberhaus and views

  • 🏰 Head up to Veste Oberhaus — a medieval citadel on the steep left bank of the Danube. Inside is the Oberhausmuseum, with different levels of the city’s history and exhibitions. Between galleries, обязательно step out onto the bastions and the Batterie Linde platforms: a panorama of the Altstadt where all three rivers, domes, roofs and bridges sit in a single plane. If you don’t want to walk, note: during the museum’s opening hours a shuttle bus runs from Rathausplatz to the fortress примерно every 30 minutes — handy for the climb up, and it’s pleasant to walk down via the shady trails of the Oberhauser Leite.

Day 4 — A river perspective: the “Dreiflüsse” cruise and embankments

  • ⛴️ In the morning — the 45-minute “Dreiflüsse-Stadtrundfahrt” boat tour with Wurm & Noé: in one loop you’ll see Passau’s main façade like a postcard — the cathedral, Veste Oberhaus, picturesque embankments, and the mouths of the Inn and Ilz. Afterwards — walk along Innkai and Untere Donaulände: flowing views, bell chimes, a light breeze off the water. On a hot day, hide in the shade of old plane trees; by the water there are plenty of little “pockets” for unhurried stops.

Day 5 — Innstadt and pilgrim Mariahilf

  • ⛪ Cross the Marienbrücke into Innstadt and climb the covered pilgrims’ staircase (321 steps) to the Wallfahrtskirche Mariahilf: Baroque towers, the silence of the монастырский courtyard, and the best “postcard” view of the old town. Walk back down to the Inn embankment for a stroll beneath the slope, where it’s especially noticeable how the green Inn meets the blue Danube.

Day 6 — The Roman layer: RömerMuseum Kastell Boiotro and Innstadt

  • 🏺 In a building above the foundations of the late Roman castellum of Boiotro, there’s a compact but very clear museum of Passau’s Roman period. It’s easy to “stitch” archaeology to the city plan here: from a military post on the Danube to the medieval development around it. After the museum, wander the narrow streets of Innstadt, drop into small cafés, and return to the center by city bus or on foot over the bridge.

Day 7 — Contemporary art: Museum Moderner Kunst – Wörlen

  • 🖼️ In former warehouses on Bräugasse — a contemporary art museum with a collection that grew out of the Wörlen family legacy and the “Danube-Forest” group. The old-town architectural frame contrasts beautifully with the exhibits — a calm day “about form and light” instead of constant movement. Step out onto Bräugasse toward the river — from there you’ll find thousands of shades of gray-blue in any season.

Day 8 — Nature: Ilzstadt, Halser Ilzschleifen and the lakeside loop

  • 🌿 A day of trails and water. From the parking lot by the Ilzbrücke bridge, start the trail along the “black” Ilz to the Halser Ilzschleifen nature reserve and the Halser Stausee: narrow river meanders, rocky banks, and secluded spots where you can hear only water and birds. This is an ideal pause midway through the itinerary: 2–3 hours of walking in the shade and plenty of picnic spots. Return to the center by city bus or on foot via a loop back to the Altstadt.

Day 9 — The museum by the cathedral and palace interiors

  • 🏛️ The Museum am Dom in the halls of the New Residence on Residenzplatz is an intimate cross-section of sacred art from Romanesque to Baroque, plus a rare chance to feel the “texture” of the former princely residence: a frescoed library, grand staircases, and details that make up the Danube’s church capital. Afterwards — an unhurried lunch down by the water.

Day 10 — Neighborhoods around the ZOB and the Klostergarten

  • 🌳 A walk through the new “city middle”: the green Klostergarten pocket park (right by the central bus station) — water, shade, benches, student and family life; shop windows, bookstores, and cafés around. This day is about the everyday side of Passau, when you simply “live” the city: unhurried, with coffee breaks and people-watching.

Day 11 — Water and relaxation: swimming and a spa day

  • 💦 Recharge at the Passauer Erlebnisbad (peb): warm pools, a sauna world, and a seasonal outdoor summer pool — the perfect way to reset before the final days. It’s easy to get there on Stadtwerke Passau city buses (signage leads прямо to the complex). In the evening — a short walk along the Danube.

Day 12 — Small Discoveries and Viewpoints

  • 🔭 Build a collection of “small” spots: the lookout by the Batterie Linde on the fortress slope, the points along the water on the Untere Donaulände riverside promenade, the open relief panorama at Dreiflüsseeck. Passau shines in the little things: a carved portal, an old guild sign, the ringing of bells, reflections on the water — a day for quiet contemplation.

Day 13 — Returning to What You Loved

  • 🧩 Go back to the places that “hooked” you: one more climb to Oberhaus for sunset, an extra hour in your favorite museum, a repeat cruise (by the water the city feels different in any weather). The point is to закрепить your own Passau and remember its rhythm.

Day 14 — Finale: A Loop Around the Center and a Farewell Dinner by the Water

  • 🍽️ Take a “lap of honor”: Town Hall Square → Domplatz → the Danube promenade → Ortspitze. Choose a restaurant with a view (fish and light Bavarian dishes by the water are just right) and calmly wrap up a 2-week romance with the city of three rivers.
