Day 1 — Old Montreal and the Old Port: historic streets, dinner, and an evening by the water
💞 This is the gentlest and most beautiful start to a romantic trip: a walk through Vieux-Montréal, Notre-Dame Basilica, Place d’Armes, the stone streets of Rue Saint-Paul, and an unhurried stroll to the Old Port. The active part of the day is about 5–6 hours at a very comfortable pace with long stops for coffee, photos, and dinner. For a couple, this is one of the best places in the city: historic architecture, atmospheric facades, easy logistics, plenty of people around, and good lighting in the evening, while the waterfront makes it easy to enjoy a beautiful walk without rushing. In the morning, it is best to begin in the historic quarter, visit the basilica and sit in a café during the day, then head to the waterfront and piers of the Old Port for golden hour. The views of the Saint Lawrence River, the walking areas near Clock Tower Beach, and the calm evening illumination are especially lovely here. The logistics are simple: the area is compact, most of the day is spent on foot, and the old center is easy to reach by metro via Place-d’Armes or Champ-de-Mars. In the warm season, it is worth booking popular restaurants and evening activities in advance, and in rainy weather it is convenient to alternate between streets, museums, and interiors. For safety, avoid going late at night to empty remote stretches of the waterfront; it is better to stay in the central part of the Old Port, check the basilica’s opening hours in advance, and if dinner ends late, return by official taxi.
