🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Riga: Old Town, Dome Square and the Daugava embankment

  • 🚶 Start your introduction to Riga in Vecrīga — the old town, where narrow cobbled streets, merchant house facades, church spires and quiet passages between squares create that very Northern European atmosphere people come here for in the warm season. Riga does not try to overwhelm visitors with scale: it reveals itself gradually — through courtyards, arches, the smell of coffee, reflections of towers in shop windows and the calm rhythm of a walk. It is especially pleasant to explore without rushing: from Riga Cathedral and Dome Square to Town Hall Square, the House of the Blackheads and the Daugava embankment, everything is compactly arranged, and it is easy to pause between sights on terraces, in pastry shops and small cafés. In the evening the old center becomes even more expressive: illuminated facades, the soft glow of street lamps and open views of the river turn the first walk into a beautiful and very photogenic introduction to the city.

  • 🚶 Be sure to walk to Town Hall Square and the House of the Blackheads — one of Riga’s most striking symbols. This place helps you feel the city’s merchant past, its ties to the Hanseatic world, maritime trade and rich urban culture. From here it is convenient to continue to St. Peter’s Church and then head down to the embankment of 11. novembra krastmala to look at the Daugava, the bridges and the skyline of the modern part of the city. It is best to keep this first day free from too many museums: the point is precisely to “catch” Riga through your feet, your eyes and the mood, with comfortable breaks to rest after the journey.

Day 2 — Riga: Art Nouveau, the Quiet Centre and city parks

  • 🚶 Dedicate the second day to a different Riga — elegant, refined and architectural. The Alberta iela area and the surrounding “Quiet Centre” are among the most famous zones of Riga Art Nouveau, where the buildings resemble theatrical sets: masks, sculptures, ornaments, fantastic animals, bay windows and luxurious entrances turn an ordinary walk into an almost museum-like experience in the open air. But the area’s main charm is that it does not feel like a set made for tourists: you can truly sense city life here, the greenery of the boulevards, the calm of upscale residential quarters and a pleasant contrast after medieval Vecrīga.

  • 🚶 Visit the Riga Art Nouveau Museum to see not only the facades, but also what everyday life at the beginning of the 20th century looked like inside: staircases, stoves, furniture, stained glass and interior details help explain why Riga is considered one of Europe’s brightest Art Nouveau capitals. After that, it makes sense to continue through the central park areas — Esplanāde, Kronvalda parks or Bastejkalns. In summer and early autumn this is an especially pleasant part of the city: shady alleys, canals, bridges and benches create the feeling of a large resort town, not just a capital city. The day turns out relaxed, visually rich and very convenient for an affordable holiday without long transfers.

Day 3 — Jūrmala: train, Majori, Jomas and the Baltic Sea beach

  • 🚆 Transfer: Riga → Jūrmala by train. From central Riga, the most convenient option is to travel from the Central Station to Majori or Dzintari stations. The trip usually takes about 30–40 minutes depending on the specific service and where you get off, and the railway line itself runs through the whole of Jūrmala, which makes the resort especially convenient for independent trips without a car.

  • 🚶 Jūrmala is not just “a separate town to tick off,” but a completely different travel rhythm. After Riga’s squares and museums, here begins a long stretch of pines, wooden villas, air scented with salt and resin, a wide beach and that distinctive Baltic light that makes even a simple walk along the shore feel surprisingly cinematic. Start in the Majori area: a walk along Jomas iela gives the feeling of an old resort with a soft European retro atmosphere — cafés, pastry shops, summer terraces, unhurried passersby and the sea literally just a few blocks away.

  • 🚶 Then head to the beach and take a long walk along the Baltic Sea. The Jūrmala shore is wide, bright and seems almost endless; even at the height of the season, it more often feels spacious than crowded. The sea may be cool, but it is precisely the combination of wind, pines, wooden architecture and a long sandy strip that creates the type of holiday that feels like a real reset. Between the beach and the residential streets, be sure to peek into the quarters with historic wooden buildings: carved verandas, little towers, pale facades and garden plots form the image of old Baltic summer-house culture, which is why Jūrmala is worth not simply “visiting,” but truly experiencing for at least one full day.

Day 4 — Jūrmala: Dzintari, wooden villas and a calm resort rhythm

  • 🚶 It is best to keep the fourth day in Jūrmala unhurried and without the urge to “see everything.” In the morning, walk between Dzintari and Majori: this is one of the most pleasant stretches of the resort, where you can clearly see how resort history, green streets and the nearness of the sea come together. In the warm season it is especially enjoyable to alternate the beach, a coffee break and walks along streets lined with wooden villas. These houses are not just a backdrop for photos, but an important part of Jūrmala’s identity: light, almost lace-like architecture, glazed verandas, little towers and carved decor recall the time when people came here for sea air, treatment, quiet and a long summer holiday.

  • 🚶 During the day you can include calmer stops: the Jūrmala City Museum, a walk to see the Dzintari concert hall from the outside, relaxing by the sea, or another short train ride within Jūrmala itself so you can get off at a different station and walk a new stretch of coastline on foot. This format is ideal for an affordable vacation: instead of expensive excursions, you have the train, walking routes, a park, a beach and architecture. That is exactly the strength of the Riga and Jūrmala itinerary: it does not wear you out, does not require a big budget and gives a very complete feeling of the Baltic.

Day 5 — Riga: Central Market, museums of your choice and a final walk

  • 🚆 Transfer: Jūrmala → Riga by train, usually about 30–40 minutes to the Central Station. This makes it possible to return to the capital without stress and spend the last day without complicated logistics.

  • 🚶 It is best to devote the final day to lively, everyday Riga. Start at the Central Market — one of the city’s most colorful places, where under giant historic pavilions you can easily feel the local rhythm through produce, aromas, seasonal berries, fish, cheeses, smoked foods and ordinary urban bustle. This is not a sterile tourist set, but a real urban space, so it is an especially good way to finish the trip: after the beautiful facades and resort air of Jūrmala, you also see Latvia’s everyday face.

  • 🚶 After the market, it is convenient to choose 1 museum based on your interests — for example, the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Museum of the History of Latvia in Riga Castle, or the Art Museum Riga Bourse. If you do not want a packed program, replace the museum with a calm walk along the city canal and a return to the old center for a farewell dinner. Such an ending makes the itinerary feel complete: you will keep both the image of Riga as a beautiful northern capital and the memory of Jūrmala as an accessible seaside resort with trains, pines, wooden quarters and the long shore of the Baltic Sea.
