🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Arrival: the “entrance” to the tuff world (base: Göreme)

  • ✈️ Flight to Cappadocia: Istanbul (IST/SAW) → Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV). Transfer to Göreme: from NAV ≈ 35–45 min, from ASR ≈ 60–75 min. Check-in and an easy walk around the center: streets at the foot of the tuff “towers,” terraces with valley panoramas.

  • 🚶 Evening: Sunset/Viewpoint lookout. The first “read layer” of the landscape — how wind and water “designed” the volumes, and people turned them into cells, churches, and homes.

Day 2 — Göreme: the open-air museum and a “school of frescoes”

  • 🚶 Göreme Open Air Museum — a complex of rock-cut monasteries and churches (Tokalı, Elmalı, Karanlık/Dark, Çarıklı, St. Barbara). Look at the layout of hewn naves, pendentives/dom es, and how the shape of the rock dictates the architecture. Early morning means softer light and fewer groups; the “Dark Church” requires separate timed tickets.

  • ☕️ Afternoon break in Göreme + a short trek to Swords Valley or to Zemi — learning to “read” traces of monastic cells and dovecotes in the cliffs.

Day 3 — Çavuşin and Paşabağ: hermitages and “rock facades”

  • 🚶 Çavuşin: an old settlement with churches (incl. Nikephoros Phokas/“Dovecote”). Then Paşabağ (Monks Valley): pillar-like “peri bacaları” with cell-like rooms in the tops. Breakdown: how ascetic functions shaped the cell plan and high entrances.

  • 🧱 Devrent/Imagination Valley (optional): natural “sculptures” with no cult interiors — a contrast to sacred rock-cut carving.

Day 4 — Zelve: three valleys as a “museum town”

  • 🚶 Zelve-Paşabağları Örenyeri — a labyrinth village of three valleys: rock-cut chapels, kitchens, “streets,” and everyday-life niches. Perfect for slow history pacing: layers of eras are visible in carving techniques and traces of slope reinforcement.

  • 🌇 Sunset in Kızılçukur/Red Valley: the light emphasizes the stratification of tuff — a “light archaeology” for photos and understanding the geology.

Day 5 — Uçhisar: the watch-fortress and Pigeon Valley

  • 🚶 Uçhisar Kalesi — a natural “citadel” with tunnels, grooves, and viewing holes; panorama of Göreme, the valleys, and Mount Erciyes. Walk around the old quarter at the base: a transition from “cave” dwellings to stone house masonry.

  • 🐦 Walk through Pigeon Valley: dovecotes are utilitarian “add-ons” on vertical faces, an important layer of agrarian history (guano collection, vineyards).

Day 6 — Underground cities I: Kaymaklı — survival logistics

  • 🚐 Kaymaklı Yeraltı Şehri: 4 open levels, wineries, storage rooms, churches, ventilation shafts. With a guide it’s easier to “assemble” the defense-and-daily-life scheme: rolling stone doors, narrow passages, smoke vents.

  • 🍽️ Return to Göreme (lunch and rest). Evening — free time/hammam.

Day 7 — Underground cities II + Selime Monastery: “vertical/underground”

  • 🚐 Derinkuyu Yeraltı Şehri: deep levels, wells and chapels; compare with Kaymaklı by layout and defensive “tactics.” Then transfer to Selime Monastery: a gigantic rock complex at the valley exit, “cathedral” spaces, kitchen niches, defensive passages.

Day 8 — Ihlara: a canyon as a “processional city”

  • 🚶 Trek through Ihlara Valley (section Ihlara → Belisırma): a river valley with a chain of rock-cut churches (Yılanlı, Kokar, Sümbüllü, etc.). The rhythm matters: entrances at different elevations, stairways, “iconographic stops.” Return via Selime Monastery or by a loop route (as you have the energy).

Day 9 — Mustafapaşa (Sinasos) and Sobesos: Hellenistic traces and Roman mosaics

  • 🚶 Mustafapaşa (Sinasos): stone mansions of Greek communities, late Ottoman houses with carvings, neighborhood churches. Then Sobesos Ancient City (Şahinefendi): baths, mosaics, forum structures — a rare “classical” layer in the heart of Cappadocia.

Day 10 — Keşlik and Gomeda: a monastery in a rural landscape

  • 🚶 Keşlik Monastery (near the village of Cemil): a refectory, several rock-cut churches with soot-darkened vaults — a good case of “provincial” monastic architecture. Optional — a quiet walk in Gomeda Valley (remains of carved chambers and footbridges).

Day 11 — Nevşehir and Gülşehir: museum + “Open Palace”

  • 🏛️ Nevşehir Museum: archaeology/ethnography to “assemble” what you’ve seen (underground cities, monasteries, ceramics). Then — Açık Saray Örenyeri (Gülşehir): rock-cut façades and “mushroom” tuff forms; a rare ensemble of utilitarian/sacred carvings on the plain.

Day 12 — Uçhisar → flight: final panorama and conclusions

  • 🌄 Early climb to a terrace (Uçhisar/Göreme) — balloons and terrain as a “final panorama.” Transfer to NAV/ASR airport and fly to Istanbul/beyond.
