🚲 ROUTE BY DAY

Day 1 — Würzburg → Veitshöchheim: a gentle start to the route along the Main embankments

  • 🚲 Start in Würzburg, finish in Veitshöchheim. About 28–35 km with a light urban warm-up and short loops on both sides of the river. Riding time: about 2–2.5 hours. Elevation gain is small, roughly up to 120 m, if you do not climb to the viewpoints. Surface is mostly paved bike paths, embankments, and quiet streets, with some dense urban bicycle and pedestrian traffic in places. The day is easy and very realistic for an average tourist: it is a convenient start after arriving by train, picking up the bike, and checking your luggage. Main stops along the way: the old bridge Alte Mainbrücke, views of Marienberg Fortress from the lower embankments, and the rococo Hofgarten in Veitshöchheim. For water and food, it is convenient to take a break in central Würzburg before departure and another one already in Veitshöchheim near the market square or on the Main riverbank. It is better to stay overnight in Veitshöchheim: it is quieter than the big city, and in the morning it is easy to continue along the Main-Radweg without extra urban logistics. Road nuances: in Würzburg itself, watch out for pedestrian zones and bridges, and do not try to ride fast through the tourist center; near palace and garden areas, some passages may be walking-only with the bicycle beside you. In May and June the route is especially pleasant because of the long daylight, and in July–August it is better to start earlier because of the heat on open sections by the river.

Day 2 — Veitshöchheim → Volkach: vineyards, Main villages, and the Mainschleife loop

  • 🚲 Start in Veitshöchheim, finish in Volkach. About 48–55 km, riding time 3.5–4.5 hours. Elevation gain is moderate, around 180–260 m, depending on small detours to viewpoints and old wine villages. The main surface is paved sections of the Main-Radweg, rural cycling roads, and a few short stretches of firm gravel or packed dirt. Difficulty is moderate: the distance is now substantial, but the profile is still friendly. Main stops: Zell am Main or riverside villages along the way, the wine area at the Mainschleife, and the old center of Volkach. Water and food are fairly convenient: almost every settlement has bakeries, cafés, or shops, but between villages services can be sparse, so it is better to carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person. Staying overnight in Volkach makes sense because of its atmospheric old town and the convenient evening access to the Mainschleife. Road nuances: on the approach to the Main loop there are tourist sections with walking traffic; during wine festival season and on warm weekends, it is worth riding more calmly. If you want to shorten the day, local transport options operate in the Mainschleife area, but the main day is excellent to ride on your own. The route is realistic because it follows the river valley almost all the time, without hard mountain passes and without dangerous high-speed roads.

Day 3 — Volkach → Schweinfurt: a long flat day along water and floodplain meadows

  • 🚲 Start in Volkach, finish in Schweinfurt. About 42–50 km, riding time 3–4 hours. Elevation gain is small, roughly 80–150 m. The surface is mostly very convenient: paved riverside bike paths, dikes, rural roads, and calm approaches to the city. Difficulty is easy or closer to moderate if there is a headwind. Main stops along the way: viewpoints at the Mainschleife, small river villages, and the entrance into the urban landscape of Schweinfurt with Maininsel. This is a day that is pleasant to ride at an easy pace: lots of open sky, water, fields, and occasional shady sections. You can refill water and grab a snack in Volkach before the start, then in villages on the way, and in Schweinfurt, where there are noticeably more services. It is best to stay overnight on Maininsel or in the center so you can walk in the evening without needing to get back on the bike. Road nuances: in the open valley there can be crosswinds or headwinds, and in hot months shade is limited; after rain, some rural turnoffs may be muddy, but the main route remains safe. This day is realistic for an ordinary cycle tourist because the distance is comfortable, the terrain is gentle, and the infrastructure along the Main-Radweg is well developed.

Day 4 — Schweinfurt → Haßfurt: calm Franconian transit between towns

  • 🚲 Start in Schweinfurt, finish in Haßfurt. About 34–40 km, riding time 2.5–3.5 hours. Elevation gain is low, about 70–140 m. The surface is mixed but comfortable: bike paths along the river, local paved roads with low traffic, and short natural sections. Difficulty is easy. This is a recovery day before the final approach to Bamberg, so it is intentionally kept short and realistic. Main stops: riverside meadows and villages along the way, viewpoints over the Mainauen, and the old center of Haßfurt. For water and food, it is convenient to take a morning supply in Schweinfurt and top it up in intermediate villages; in the second half of the day, it is better not to rely only on small rural kiosks, especially on Sunday. Staying overnight in Haßfurt is useful logistically: it is a compact town for dinner, laundry, checking the bike, and resting before the final stage. Road nuances: follow the official Main-Radweg corridor rather than a car navigator; some road shortcuts may look shorter but are worse and less pleasant for a touring bike day. The day is realistic because it prevents overloading the route and leaves energy for a beautiful finale.

Day 5 — Haßfurt → Bamberg: the final entrance into the city of canals and old stone

  • 🚲 Start in Haßfurt, finish in Bamberg. About 45–52 km, riding time 3.5–4.5 hours. Elevation gain is moderate, usually around 120–220 m, without hard climbs but with several rolling sections. The surface is mostly paved bike paths and quality rural corridors, with some packed gravel in places. Difficulty is moderate, mainly because of cumulative fatigue by the fifth day. Main stops: river sections of Upper Franconia, the approach to Bamberg through green corridors, and the final ride into the old town, the rose garden, and the Regnitz embankments if you still have energy for an evening loop. It is better to take extra water and food in the morning, then make short stops in villages or on the approach to Bamberg. It is best to stay overnight in Bamberg itself or in nearby Hallstadt if you need a quieter and often more affordable option. Road nuances: closer to Bamberg, urban bicycle and pedestrian traffic increases; in the center it is easy to be tempted by narrow historic streets, but there it is often more comfortable to walk beside the bike. In rain, be especially careful on old-town cobblestones and bridges. The day is realistic because the final section stays within the corridor of the famous tourist route Main-Radweg and does not require athletic training if the pace is touristic and includes breaks.
