ČESKÝ KRUMLOV

ČESKÝ KRUMLOV

Step into Český Krumlov’s storybook past, wandering from the cobbled Inner Town through Latrán to the grand Castle Complex. Linger in the Castle Gardens and at hilltop viewpoints where the Vltava curls around red roofs and towers straight out of the Middle Ages.

🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Arrival and first impressions: Inner Town

  • 🚶 Arrive in Český Krumlov and check into a hotel within the historic core. In the evening, walk to Náměstí Svornosti: the façades of Renaissance houses glow in soft light, and the center gathers around the Marian column. From the embankments by the Lazebnický Bridge, the town opens up like a miniature theater valley: narrow “stream-streets” run down to the river, and above it all rises the castle tower with its painted drum.

Day 2 — Latrán and the “craftsmen’s town”

  • 🚶 In the morning, head to the Latrán quarter: this is the “working” part of the old town at the foot of the castle. Narrow lanes, craftsmen’s signs, wooden galleries, and tiny courtyards. Visit the monastic complex Kláštery Český Krumlov — calm cloisters, workshops, and quiet yards bring back a sense of time. Have lunch in one of the historic taverns and go down to the water — the Vltava flows lazily here, repeating the curve of the ancient layout.

Day 3 — Castle complex: courtyards, the Cloak Bridge, and the tower

  • 🚶 Dedicate the day to the castle ensemble: walk through the five courtyards, climb to the Cloak Bridge — a multi-level gallery spanning the ravine — and visit the Castle Museum. The climb to the tower’s observation deck rewards you with a 360° panorama: tiled roofs, ribbons of river, and a ridge of hills to the horizon. In the evening, take a leisurely loop along the fortification walls and return through Latrán.

Day 4 — Castle gardens and Baroque “open sky”

  • 🚶 Change the scale: from stone courtyards to the greenery of Zámecká zahrada. A Baroque parterre, alleys, cascades, and a perspective toward the Upper Castle. Deeper in is the legendary revolving stage of the summer theater. This is a day of “long lines”: walk slowly, watching the geometry of the gardens and the contrast with the dense fabric of the old town.

Day 5 — 20th-century art: Egon Schiele Art Centrum

  • 🚶 In former brewery warehouses there is now a museum of contemporary art. Exhibitions on the life and legacy of Egon Schiele sit alongside temporary shows by Czech and international artists. ESAC’s spaces are great for their light and scale; after the museum, stroll along the embankment to the city park: soft grass, the shade of old trees, and a view of the Vltava’s bend.

Day 6 — The Seidel Photo Studio Museum and the “city through a lens”

  • 🚶 The Seidel house-studio is a rare case of a fully preserved early-20th-century photo studio: glass negatives, cameras, a darkroom, and a living history of provincial photography. Also walk to the Synagogue and the quiet quarters on the other side of the Vltava. In the evening — an unhurried café by the water.

Day 7 — The Vltava: a short city float

  • 🛶 The most “lighthearted” and joyful day: rent a kayak/raft for a short loop on the Vltava right through the center. From the water, façades and bridges look like stage sets, and the town comes together like a postcard panorama. After the float — a late lunch and rest in the shade of the city park.

Day 8 — Viewpoints: Křížová hora and Horní Brána

  • 🚶 Climb the “Stations of the Cross” alley to the chapel on Křížová hora: at the top is the best view of the old town, the gardens, and the forests of the Blanský Forest. Descend via the Horní Brána area: quiet lanes, gardens, and angles where Krumlov reveals itself differently — without crowds and with the feel of southern Czechia at home.

Day 9 — Trip to České Budějovice: a “big South Bohemian city”

  • 🚆 30–45 minutes by bus — and you’re on the huge Přemysl Otakar II Square with the Black Tower. A contrast after intimate Krumlov: straight streets, cobblestones, and scale. Walk to the Malše embankment, drop into a café or a museum — and return to Krumlov by evening.

Day 10 — Trip to Hluboká nad Vltavou: “Neo-Tudor in Bohemia”

  • 🚆 Via Budějovice, get to Hluboká Castle — white battlements, park views, and interiors as if lifted from the pages of a Victorian novel. After returning, take an evening loop through Latrán and the bridges — the town is especially beautiful at dusk.

Day 11 — Zlatá Koruna: a riverside monastery

  • 🚆 A short trip to the Cistercian monastery of Zlatá Koruna: a Gothic chapel, cloisters, and a sense of time “built into” the Vltava landscape. If you like, combine it with a short trail/walk along the river.

Day 12 — Holašovice (UNESCO): “peasant Baroque”

  • 🚗 A monument village with a perfect square and “peasant Baroque” facades. Farmhouses, gates, ornaments, and an astonishing cohesion of the ensemble. An easy day for visual rest: details, silence, and fields around the perimeter.

Day 13 — Free day: small museums and courtyards

  • 🚶 Add what you missed: the Wax Museum under the square, the Museum of Torture (for the curious), another loop through galleries and courtyards. Buy local prints/photos — Krumlov travels well on paper.

Day 14 — Farewell to the city

  • 🚶 Morning coffee on the square, one last look from the bridge by the water, and a slow walk to the bus/train. This city works through repetition — when you leave, you already know you’ll come back.
