🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Arrival in Astana → train/transfer to Burabay + evening at Lake Borovoe

  • With kids, it’s best to travel during the day: the fast train from Astana to the “Kurort-Borovoe” station takes about 2.5 hours; by car via highway E125 it’s roughly 3 hours. After arrival, take an easy stroll along the Borovoe waterfront: pine scent, smooth water, sweet kiosks, and kids’ swings. In the evening—an early dinner and sleep: acclimatization matters most.

Day 2 — Burabay Damu Visitor Center: Nature Museum + petting zoo corner

  • This is the route’s “kid anchor”: interactive halls with animals in their natural habitats, mineralogy, a terrarium, and in the petting corner—rabbits and farm animals you can gently feed. Plan for 2–3 hours and breaks for water/snacks. On the way out there’s a spacious yard with rides and shaded benches.

Day 3 — Beach day at Lake Borovoe: boats/pedal boats + sand play

  • Calm water and shallow areas near the shore are just right for little kids. Morning—swimming and bucket games; daytime—family boat rides in life jackets; after lunch—quiet time/cartoons at the hotel. End the day with ice cream and a walk along the pine alleys by the water.

Day 4 — Forest legends: Zhumbaktas Rock and panoramic views

  • The “Zhumbaktas” route is an easy lakeside hike: kids look for “faces” on the rock and listen to the story of a Kalmyk girl. It’s best to wear sneakers; there are no steep climbs. Bring binoculars: the isthmus offers beautiful angles over the lake.

Day 5 — Okzhetpes: a fairy tale among the pines

  • Okzhetpes Rock is another “living legend” of Burabay. With kids, make it a day for imagination: invent your own myth, collect a “pinecone herbarium,” learn a few simple Kazakh words from the phrasebook, and have a mini picnic in the shade.

Day 6 — Shchuchinsk: National Ski Center (summer activities) + pool

  • The complex with its famous ski jumps impresses kids with its scale. In summer, walking areas and facility tours are available; kids’ classes are held in indoor halls; many hotels/centers offer a pool and sauna. Perfect for 2–3 hours with no “rush.”

Day 7 — Visitor center: Burabay History Museum + ethnographic hall

  • Return to Burabay Damu—on the 3rd floor there are multimedia halls about the traditions of the Great Steppe. Do short “loops” of 45–60 minutes, alternating exhibits with outdoor breaks. Kids love the “life-size” exhibits: a yurt, costumes, and household items.

Day 8 — Abylai Khan’s Meadow: multimedia interactive + trail to the “Throne”

  • An architectural memorial complex in a pine forest—a place of power and great photos. Inside the multimedia space: light, sound, and short stories about khans and batyrs (interesting for school-age kids). Finish with a walk to the granite “Throne of Abylai Khan” along a soft forest trail.

Day 9 — Bike day: a family route along the water + picnic

  • Bike rentals in the village of Burabay let you choose children’s/teen models and seats for toddlers. Ride in short segments of 20–30 minutes, take frequent “sweet stops,” and snap photos by the piers.

Day 10 — Lake Shchuchye: quiet, boardwalks, birdwatching

  • Shchuchye is a deeper, cooler lake—ideal for a “contemplative” day: wooden boardwalks, piers, and conifer scents. Bring a bird field guide, sheets for “quiet drawing,” and warm hoodies—it’s fresher by the water.

Day 11 — “Trailblazers” quest: forest paths and mini tasks

  • Build a route from checkpoints: “find three types of pinecones,” “hear a woodpecker,” “photograph bark up close,” “count the steps on the trail staircase.” A day without museums, focused on freedom and play.

Day 12 — Kokshetau (day trip): regional museum + city park

  • A 1-day trip: the road is about an hour one way. In the local history museum—archaeology, regional nature, and interactive features for schoolchildren. After—swings/ice cream in the city park and return before sunset.

Day 13 — Free day: shore fishing, photos near boat stations

  • Kids enjoy “simple discoveries”: feeding fish by the pier, racing little boats made of bark, collecting a “pebble collection.” In the evening—souvenirs, postcards, and a shared recap of the trip.

Day 14 — Burabay → Astana: travel day and a “gold reserve” of time

  • Leave without rushing: for the train—arrive 50–60 minutes before departure; by car—add a 30–45 minute buffer for stops. On the train—sticker books, audio fairy tales, and light snacks. Head home with the feeling that the kids have “soaked up” nature.
