SOUTH TYROL

SOUTH TYROL

In South Tyrol, Alpine peaks meet Mediterranean ease: begin in Bolzano, float up to the Ritten Plateau, gaze into the emerald mirror of Lake Carezza, and explore mountain lore at Sigmundskron’s MMM Firmian. Drift to Merano for the blossom-rich Trauttmansdorff Gardens and the Tappeiner Promenade, then follow the orchard-lined Vinschgau past castles to the edge of the glaciers.

🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Bolzano: old town, arcades, and the Talvera riverside promenades

  • 🚶 Start at Walther Square (Waltherplatz) — Bolzano’s “living room.” Walk under the medieval arcades (Via dei Portici/Lauben), pop into the market Piazza delle Erbe, and admire the marble façade of the cathedral. At sunset, head to the Talvera meadows (Prati del Talvera): broad bridges, views of porphyry cliffs, and the valley’s soft light — perfect for a first evening and tuning into the mountain rhythm.

Day 2 — Bolzano: the “ice museum” and contemporary art

  • 🏛️ Dedicate the morning to the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology (Ötzi — the Iceman): compact, rich, with the rare effect of “living history.” After that, take a short riverside walk to Museion: the glass cube of the contemporary art museum gathers light and the river’s reflections around it. Pair heavy history with light visuality — this city does it well.

Day 3 — Ritten Plateau: cable car, panoramas, and the “earth pyramids”

  • 🚡 From the lower station of the Renon cable car (Via Renon 12), in 12 minutes you soar above Bolzano — and arrive on a sunny plateau: quiet meadows, old villas, spruce trees, and understated Alpine chic. Transfer to the narrow-gauge Rittner Bahn to Klobenstein/Collalbo and take a trail out to the “earth pyramids” — natural columns of moraine. A day for views, air, and unhurried pace: return the same way, leaving an hour for coffee with a view.

Day 4 — Sigmundskron Castle and Messner Mountain Museum Firmian

  • 🏰 On a rock above apple orchards stands Sigmundskron — a fortress where Reinhold Messner assembled the most important part of his mountain museums. You follow the clockwise route along the bastions, where mountaineering turns into philosophy — artifacts, photos, texts, and wind. After the museum, head down to the cycle path in Eppan — a perfect flat loop among orchards if you want to prolong that “Sunday” mood.

Day 5 — Eggental Valley and Lake Carezza

  • 🚌 A short trip to the emerald Lake Carezza (Karersee): conifer scent, the Latemar’s rocky pylons propping up the sky, and a “fairy-tale” mirror of water. Best time is early morning or twilight. Then you can walk the loop around the lake (easy route) and be back in Bolzano by lunchtime. A day of intense color and a short road without fatigue.

Day 6 — Unhurried Bolzano: markets, courtyards, a glass of Lagrein

  • 🍷 Skip the museum checklist and live the city like locals: a late breakfast in the courtyards by the arcades, leisurely shopping in artisan boutiques, tasting local Lagrein or Gewürztraminer in wine bars (enoteche). In the afternoon — a walk through the parks of Petrarca and by the station: greenery in the center helps you “exhale” before moving on.

Day 7 — Transfer to Merano and an evening on the Passer Promenade

  • 🚆 In 35–40 minutes you’re in Merano: a completely different rhythm — resort-like and refined, with long river promenades and the airy Kurhaus. In the evening, stroll along the Passerpromenade, stop by a café near Termeplatz, and plan for gardens and a long walk along the slope tomorrow.

Day 8 — Trauttmansdorff Castle Gardens and the Touriseum

  • 🌿 80 themed gardens in an amphitheater above the city: from cacti to rice terraces, from viewing platforms to mini pavilions. In the castle itself is the Touriseum, a museum of the history of Alpine tourism: ironic, smart, and visually rich. Return to the center via the “Sissi Trail” — a gentle downhill grade and postcard views over the valley.

Day 9 — Tappeiner Promenade: a sunny path above the city

  • ☀️ Merano’s signature walk: 3–6 km along the southern slope of Küchelberg, where cedars and magnolias sit alongside palms and agaves. Almost no elevation gain, with plenty of benches and scenic pockets — an ideal “recovery day.” On the way down — into the old center under the arcades (Laubengasse) for an aperitif and strudel.

Day 10 — Merano 2000: plateau, panoramas, and gourmet mountain huts

  • ⛰️ The cable car takes you up to the high plateau of Merano 2000: in clear weather you can make out the Ortler range and the Dolomites from here. Choose an easy loop across the alpine pastures with a stop at a hut (cheese, soup of the day, apple strudel) — then head down by evening to the thermal baths for the warming contrast of the pools.

Day 11 — Vinschgau by train: Naturno or the Glurns loop

  • 🚆 Take the regional train along apple orchards toward Val Venosta: to Naturno it’s only about 20 minutes. A full-day option is to go to the tiny medieval town of Glurns (Glorenza/Glurns), walk the fortress walls, have coffee on the tiny square, and return by sunset.

Day 12 — Merano Museums: Palais Mamming and art in the Lauben

  • 🏛️ The city museum in the baroque Palais Mamming tells Merano’s story through strange and moving objects—from an Egyptian mummy to Napoleon’s mask. Round out the day with the contemporary scene at Kunst Meran Merano Arte under the arcades—compact, intimate, with a taste for focused exhibitions.

Day 13 — Short day trips: Dorf Tirol or Parcines

  • 🚶 Choose: go up to Dorf Tirol (views over the whole valley basin, the town below in the palm of your hand) or head to the Parcines/Partschins waterfall—tall, “spray-filled,” with a forest trail. In the evening—a final dinner on the Passer river promenade.

Day 14 — Finale in Merano: late breakfast, thermal baths, a farewell loop

  • 🛀 End the trip in a dolce vita rhythm: a late breakfast under the arcades, a few hours in the warm pools of Terme Merano, a slow walk through the center. The key is not to rush: South Tyrol is best remembered for gentle transitions and mountain light.
