BALATON

BALATON

Swap Budapest’s bustle for Lake Balaton’s shimmer: feel the buzz in Siófok, stroll Balatonfüred’s promenade, and gaze from Tihany’s lavender-scented abbey cliffs. Continue west to Keszthely’s stately palace and Hévíz’s steaming thermal lake, then end in Tapolca boating through an underground cave beneath volcanic hills.

🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Arrival in Budapest → Siófok: gentle acclimatization by Balaton’s “capital” side

  • ✈️ After arriving at Budapest Airport, it’s convenient to take a MÁV train from Budapest-Déli station to Siófok (usually 1.5–2 hours, depending on the train). Upon arrival—check-in and a walk along the Golden Shore promenade: flat walkways, sandy areas, playgrounds, and plenty of cafés with sweets. We recommend an easy evening pace, an early dinner, and resting up before the active days ahead.

Day 2 — Siófok: Bella Zoo petting zoo + beach and the Water Tower

  • 🐪 Bella Zoo Park is a kids’ favorite “pet and feed” format: llamas, alpacas, ponies, camels, petting pens, and guided pony rides with an instructor. The grounds are green, with shade and snack spots. After lunch—swim at the city beach and go up the Water Tower (elevator, panorama of the lake and the town).

Day 3 — Siófok/Zamárdi: a ropes course among pines

  • 🧗 Zamárdi Adventure Park is a large forest ropes park where routes are marked by a child’s height: “white” for little ones, “yellow” for families, “red” for teens. The session lasts 2–3 hours; gear, briefing, and helmets are included. Nearby are the lake and picnic lawns—you can combine it with swimming.

Day 4 — Move to the north shore: Szántód ↔ Tihany ferry + the “lavender” visitor center

  • ⛴️ In the morning, take a bus/taxi to the Szántódrév crossing → an 8-minute ferry to Tihanyrév (runs frequently; in season until late evening). Then 10–20 minutes by bus to the village of Tihany or straight to Balatonfüred. Check in in Balatonfüred.

  • 💜 Lavender House Visitor Centre (Tihany) is an interactive exhibition about the peninsula and lavender plantations, easy for kids: volcano models, “lavender under a microscope,” short films, and touch displays. Walk to Belső-tó (the Inner Lake), ice cream on the main street, and sunset over the bay.

Day 5 — Balatonfüred: a full day at Annagora Aquapark

  • 🌊 Annagora Aquapark features water slides, kids’ areas, lazy rivers, and outdoor pools. Family strategy: at opening—hit the most popular slides; in midday heat—kids’ splash zones/shaded areas and lunch; in the evening—the wave pool and repeats of favorite slides. Bring aqua shoes and towels; sunscreen is a must.

Day 6 — Balatonfüred and nearby: pedal boat/sightseeing cruise + BalatoniBob

  • 🛥️ For a change of pace—take a one-hour sightseeing cruise on the lake (regular passenger lines and cruises run between nearby ports). It’s safe, interesting, and gives a child the “whole Balaton picture.”

  • 🛷 After lunch—BalatoniBob Leisure Park (Balatonfűzfő): two alpine coaster tracks, zip lines, viewpoints. For little ones—shared rides with a parent; for teens—faster rail tracks. The bay panorama is a bonus to the adrenaline.

Day 7 — Wooden walkways and animals: Veszprém Zoo

  • 🦒 Veszprém Zoo is one of the country’s best family zoos: spacious enclosures, petting areas, rope bridges, and big playgrounds. There’s a café on site; plan 3–4 hours and bring light snacks. Travel time from Balatonfüred is usually 35–50 minutes by bus/taxi.

Day 8 — Tihany: the abbey, the echo, and lakeside paths

  • ⛪ The Benedictine Abbey in Tihany: a short visit to the museum and basilica (the museum is made understandable for schoolkids), the panoramic terrace, and the famous “echo point” on the way down. Then—a kid-friendly walk along the trail around Belső-tó: birdwatching, wooden boardwalks, reeds.

Day 9 — Move to Keszthely/Hévíz: Festetics Palace

  • 🚆/🚌 Balatonfüred → Keszthely: along the north shore through scenic hills (usually 1.5–2.5 hours by bus/with rail transfers).

  • 🏰 Helikon Castle Museum (Festetics Palace): interiors with “real” libraries, carriage halls, and a park suitable for stroller walks. Kids love the “cartoon castle” feeling and tasks from family booklets (ask at the ticket desk).

Day 10 — Hévíz: swimming in the warm lake and family areas

  • 🌿 Lake Hévíz is a unique natural thermal lake. For families: stick to the children’s/family areas of the complex (safer temperature and depth), do short 15–20 minute dips alternating with rest on loungers. For younger kids, use inflatable armbands and watch their temperature.

Day 11 — Gyenesdiás: Festetics animal park + beach

  • 🐑 Festetics Imre Animal Park introduces Hungarian breeds (Hungarian Grey cattle, buffaloes, Racka sheep), with a mini-farm and a playground. Then—an hour of free play at the family beach in Gyenesdiás: shallow water, great for little ones, lots of shade.

Day 12 — Zalakaros: a large water park & thermal complex

  • 🏊 Zalakarosi Fürdő is a huge family area with many water attractions and children’s pools. Pro tip: come at opening, bring water/snacks, and take “dry” breaks every 60–90 minutes so the child doesn’t get overstimulated. In bad weather, the indoor parts of the complex are open.

Day 13 — Tapolca and Szigliget: an underground lake by boat + a hilltop castle

  • 🛶 Tapolca Lake Cave Visitor Centre is a rare experience: a boat ride on a bright underground lake (about 18°C year-round) plus interactive halls about karst and caves. Tickets often sell out—arrive in the morning and be ready for timed entry slots.

  • 🛡️ After lunch—Szigliget Castle with panoramas over vineyards and Lake Balaton. The climb is not difficult, but bring comfortable shoes and water; at the top there are platforms and lots of space for play and photos.

Day 14 — Buffer day to revisit a favorite spot → Return to Budapest

  • 🧳 Repeat your child’s “hit”: the zoo/slides/water park again—or plan a calm picnic by the water. Travel to Budapest by MÁV train: from Keszthely/Siófok/Balatonfüred it’s usually 2.5–3.5 hours depending on the schedule.
