🚗 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Salzburg: a gentle start to the road trip

  • 🚗 Start in Salzburg, finish in Salzburg. About 25–35 km around the city and nearby viewpoints, with around 1 hour of pure driving time. After picking up the car, it is convenient to have a short adaptation day without long transfers: airport or station area → Mirabell → historic center → viewpoints on Mönchsberg/fortress area. For parking in the center, city garages are practical, and for a walk through the Old Town it is better not to try searching for a street spot. If you arrive in the morning, you can add a drive out to Hellbrunn Palace. It is best to stay overnight in Salzburg so there is no rush on the first day. Road nuances: in Austria traffic keeps right, the center has many one-way streets and paid/restricted parking areas, and with a rental car it is worth checking the vignette, safety vest kit, first-aid kit, and insurance coverage conditions right away. The day is realistic because it helps you calmly get used to the car, navigation, and parking without a tiring autobahn stage.

Day 2 — Salzburg → Fuschlsee → St. Gilgen → St. Wolfgang → Hallstatt/Obertraun

  • 🚗 Start in Salzburg, finish in the Hallstatt or Obertraun area. About 95–115 km, with 2.5–3 hours of pure driving time without walks. This is a beautiful lake day through Salzkammergut, where the main stops are logically arranged like this: Fuschlsee for the first panoramic coffee stop, St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee for a walk along the waterfront, then St. Wolfgang as the most atmospheric village on the route. After that, the road heads toward the lake-and-mountain area of Hallstatt. It is better to arrive in Hallstatt no later than early afternoon, because the parking lots fill up and the historic center is effectively car-free. For a calmer overnight stay with a car, Obertraun on the opposite shore is very convenient. Road nuances: roads are good, but in places narrow and winding; it is not worth packing too many villages into one day. Parking in Hallstatt is usually based around P1/P2/P3, and if your hotel is in the village center, you need to check the hotel ticket and shuttle arrangement. The day is realistic for an average driver: short scenic legs, frequent stops, and no difficult mountain passes.

Day 3 — Hallstatt and Dachstein viewpoints: an easy day without changing base

  • 🚗 Start and finish in the Hallstatt/Obertraun area. About 35–60 km, with 1–1.5 hours of pure driving time. The day is best devoted to a Hallstatt + Obertraun + Gosau combination. In the morning — a walk through Hallstatt, the bone house, and the lakeside promenade; then a drive to the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car in Obertraun for the ascent to 5 Fingers, if the weather is clear. After lunch, you can drive to Gosausee — one of the most photogenic road-trip stops in the region, with a magnificent reflection of the Dachstein massif in the lake. It is important to note a current detail: Salzwelten Hallstatt and the funicular in Hallstatt are closed for reconstruction until summer 2026, so do not build the day around the mine and Skywalk. Parking at the cable car in Obertraun is paid in the summer season, license plate recognition is used, and it is more convenient to plan your time so you do not have to rush for the last lifts. The day is realistic because these are short local drives around one base, without extra luggage and with a weather buffer.

Day 4 — Hallstatt/Obertraun → optional Bad Ischl → Innsbruck

  • 🚗 Start in the Hallstatt/Obertraun area, finish in Innsbruck. About 215–245 km, with 3–3.5 hours of pure driving time. This is the main inter-base transfer of the route, but it is quite comfortable for one day. Along the way, you can make one long stop in the Bad Ischl area or at one of the services/gas stations before joining the autobahn. The final section goes toward Tyrol, where the alpine scenery gradually changes: lakes and gentle hills give way to wide valleys and more dramatic mountain walls. It is best to arrive in Innsbruck before the evening rush hour and choose a hotel with parking or a city garage near the old center in advance. Road nuances: autobahns require a vignette, and with certain bypass or transalpine options there may be additional toll sections, so it is best to use navigation with toll awareness enabled. The day is realistic because it is one long but direct and logical transfer without complicated hairpin roads.

Day 5 — Innsbruck and Nordkette: city + mountains without heavy driving

  • 🚗 Start and finish in Innsbruck. About 15–30 km, with 40–60 minutes of pure driving time. This is a lighter day after the intercity transfer. By car, it is convenient to drive to parking in the center, leave the car there, and go up to Nordkette via the Altstadt/Hungerburg station. Such a day combines the old town, the Golden Roof, views of the Inn, and a full alpine panorama without the need to tackle a mountain road yourself. For Nordkette visitors there is a convenient parking arrangement through Innenstadt Garage with a special day rate after validation. If you want more driving, you can add a short drive to Bergisel or along the Inn valley for an evening scenic loop. Road nuances: the old town has many pedestrian zones and restricted-access streets, so you should drive into the center strictly by navigation to a specific garage rather than trying to improvise. The day is realistic because the car is used as a convenient access tool, not as a source of stress.

Day 6 — Innsbruck → Achensee → Karwendel valleys/Pertisau → Innsbruck

  • 🚗 Start and finish in Innsbruck. About 95–130 km, with 2–2.5 hours of pure driving time. This is one of the best day trips in Tyrol: the road to Achensee leads to a long turquoise lake, and then you can choose between a calm walk in Pertisau, a short drive toward the Karwendel valleys, or panoramic stops along the shore. Main stops along the way: lake viewpoints, the promenade in Pertisau, and one of the convenient parking pull-ins for a short walk. The region has its own paid parking logic; locals use the Achensee Parking Card, but for tourists it is usually easier to use the regular on-site payment. Road nuances: this section is very scenic but popular in good weather, so it is better to leave in the morning. Do not park on the roadside by the water where there are no official spaces. The day is realistic because it is a compact loop with moderate mileage and a big visual payoff.

Day 7 — Innsbruck → a panoramic Tyrolean finale through Wipptal Valley or drive toward the airport

  • 🚗 Start in Innsbruck, finish in Innsbruck or at the car return point. About 45–95 km, with 1–2 hours of pure driving time. It is best to keep the last day flexible: if your flight is from Innsbruck, you can do a short drive toward Igls, Patsch, or the Wipptal valley with panoramic views of Tyrolean peaks and then return the car calmly. If your flight is from Salzburg and you need a return transfer, it is better to plan it as a separate day outside this 7-day route so as not to break the comfortable structure of the tour. For those who want to see one more iconic autobahn element, you can drive partly toward the Brenner corridor without going too far: it is important to remember that the A13 Brenner is a separate toll section. Road nuances: do not plan a mountain loop too close to the car return time, refuel in advance according to the full-to-full policy, and leave extra time for return at the airport or station. The day is realistic because it is not overloaded and allows you to finish the trip without a stressful marathon.
